Rise & Shine...whether you like it or not

Yesterday we spent most of the day visiting my sister and her new baby--and her family too, of course :)--two hours away. We didn't get home until 11 so I was so happy to see my pillow. Lately, if I don't eat right before bed, I'll wake up in the middle of the night hungry but last night I said a little prayer helping me sleep through because I desperately needed the rest. Well unfortunately my prayer wasn't answered and I awoke bright and early at 3am.

I hate eating in the middle of the night so I reluctantly got our of bed and ventured into the kitchen to see what I could eat that needed very little effort to prepare. I decided on a fruit leather--which are really yummy and healthy if you're looking for good snacks (from Costco) for you or your kids--and ate it as quick as my half-awake self could. 20 minutes later I was back in bed but still with a rumbling in my tummy. I decided to ignore it and try my luck falling asleep hungry. It took about an hour--but probably would have anyway had I eaten more--so around 4 I finally made it to dream land.

Not for long...

Right at 5 o'clock I was awakened to SCREECH! CRASH! BAM! HOOOOONK! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! I gotta tell you it scared the crap out of me! Spencer said I was on my knees looking out the window from laying down in less than a second flat! The entry way to our apartment complex is very dangerous. It's on a curve on a pretty busy road. A couple months ago someone didn't turn and ran into the shoulder and up the embankment. That wasn't the first time someone had been in an accident right outside our apartment either. So this morning someone was trying to turn left into the complex and got hit by the oncoming car. It was early and not too many cars were on the road at all so Spencer--and a bunch of other guys--went out to make sure they got the help they needed. I stayed inside and had breakfast because I was hungry again. Unfortunately that bowl of cereal didn't even fill me up all the way because I tossed and turned for another hour until I finally dozed off around 6:30.

I thought the next time I would wake up would be because a certain 2 year old would be standing by my bedside whispering, "Mommy, I'm hungry. I want some dinner, Mommy." Not the case. In fact when I first wrote this it was just after 8 and she was still not awake. Not that I'm complaining though! :) She even slept through the final thing that disturbed my already inconsistent sleep last night.

Yep at 7:30 I was woken up scared by loud clappings of thunder right over our house. Since I'd only been asleep about an hour I was so confused and couldn't understand what was waking me up for the THIRD time in 4 hours! Finally it registered and I laid there for a few minutes listening as my heartbeat calmed down. I actually like thunder and the smell of a storm that usually accompanies it. We get thunder so rarely that it's actually a treat. It lasted about 20 minutes and now the storm has passed--I can still hear the faint rumblings in the distance--but it's mark is lasting. I am awake and probably will be for the remainder of the day.

We have late church so there's little hope of me getting a nap today. Pray that the speakers aren't boring so I don't fall asleep in Sacrament Meeting and especially pray that my Sunbeams aren't too crazy. I don't think I'll have the energy to control 7 three to four year olds for 2 hours today. Oh and take a nap for me....Somebody should at least get some sleep....

Losing my mind?

Yesterday Rachel and I took a nap together in my bed. I wanted to take a nap and so I laid down in her bed with her. After a while she still wasn't settling down and looked like she was needing some more room. So I said "Let's go take a nap in mommy's bed." That did the trick and we were both out quickly. Today I put Rachel down in her bed and then went to lay in my bed. About a half hour later I woke up to what I thought was Rachel's voice--turned out it was just some kid outside. I looked up really quick to get my bearings and then looked next to me and saw that Rachel wasn't there! I swore she was sleeping next to me today too! I ran around the apartment looking for traces of her until I remembered she was sleeping in her bed.

Good thing I'm just losing my mind and not my kid.

8 Things about my marriage

I feel like I've been neglecting my blog lately. I haven't really felt like I had much to say. Life is good...couldn't be much better. It is stinking hot today, but we have a pool accessible to us so that's where Rachel and I have been all morning. Now I'm sitting in my nice air conditioned apartment with my 2 year old snoozing. Last week Scribbit put this on her blog and actually tagged me so I decided to do it. Since Spencer and I are celebrating our 5th anniversary this Friday, August 17th I thought it fitting that I do it.

Eight Things about My Marriage

1. Where did you meet your husband? We met at the singles ward in Poway, California. If you want to get more specific we were actually in the same Primary class when we were 8. We actually have a birthday card to Spencer with my name on it proving it. We don't remember that of course, but I guess it was meant to be at an early age. :)

2. What was the first thing you said to your husband? I can't remember specifically. One Sunday during Break the Fast we started talking because we found out that we were going to be speaking in Sacrament Meeting together in a couple weeks. We started talking about our families and ourselves and I mentioned that we were talking right around my birthday. That's when we found out that I am a month older than Spencer. All that time I thought he was a couple years older than me and he thought I was a couple years younger than him.

3. Where was your first kiss? First date? Well our first kiss was outside his house after a long drive home from Utah. See, both of us wanted to go to General Conference and we had a few other people who wanted to go too. Bottom line, they all backed out last minute. So there we were, just the two of us in my new truck. We drove to Conference, had a great time and then on the way home were holding hands. He kissed me when I dropped him off at his house.

4. Did you have a long or short courtship/engagement? We started dating in October, took a break in November and then got back together near the end of November. Then in May he proposed and we were married in August. You decide if it was short or long. I think it was perfect.

5. Where did you get engaged? The top of the Hyatt in San Diego. We had dinner at the Napa Valley Grille in Horton Plaza then walked around Sea Port Village. Then we took the elevator to the 40th floor and he proposed there overlooking San Diego. I should say that Spencer had asked my Dad almost three weeks before but the ring was late. I kept wondering when it was going to happen! My parents were starting to wonder if he was really serious! :)

6. Where did you get married? The San Diego Temple on Aug 17th, 2002

7. How did the reception go? It was fantastic! We had so much fun dancing. It was just a big party. We loved it!

8. How was the honeymoon? We spent our first two nights in Dana Point. Then drove to Santa Barbara and we took the long way there. I'd never been there so we hung out at the beach, went to the zoo and to a botanical garden. We didn't have too much time, but it was great fun!

So there you go. I can't believe it's been 5 years already. We've had our ups and downs, but overall I couldn't be happier. I love my husband with all my heart and am so grateful he picked me to spend eternity with.

President Faust has passed away

I just got an email from a friend letting me know about the passing of President James E. Faust. Because nothing else I can say would be better, I'll just direct your attention to the article on LDS.org.

What a good, kind loving man he was. His comments and insight in the Ensign and General Conference will be greatly missed by me.

Go Padres!

So Spencer and I have been trying to make time to go to a Padres game all summer. They have 2 for 1 day games once a month and so we finally settled on today to go. You get two for the price of one tickets as well as hot dogs. Not a bad deal, eh? We were a little late getting there and as we were walking up the ramp screams and shouts erupt from the stadium. We had just scored the first of the game! Only it wasn't just your run of the mill score; it was a two-run homer. Yay Padres! After two nights of them losing to the Diamondbacks it was nice to see the Padres ahead of the game. 2-0. Not a bad way to start the game.

So we kept walking up to where our seats were. We knew they were going to be high, but little did we know I had bought tickets for the VERY last row of the stadium! We were so high up! It actually turned into a blessing because there wasn't anyone on either side of us for a few seats and no one behind us that Rachel could block the view of. Plus we had a pretty dang good view of the field.

The game was awesome! The Padres were definitely showing their stuff to the D-backs today. After the 2nd inning two-run homer the Padres were on a roll. They hit 3 more home runs--most of them multiple runs--during the game to make it 11-0 at the end.

Not only did the Padres shut out the Diamondbacks, but the day was perfect for it. We were worried we were going to be in the beating sun, but because we were so high up, there was only shade. Plus the breeze was delightful up that high. All in all a great day to spend at Petco Park with the family. I think we'll do it again next month...

Here's Rachel and I sporting some Padres hat love. :)
